Where it all began for many of us.
The first object course at Westmoreland Park in Eugene was installed in
1987. It consisted of 9 wooden posts wrapped with tin near the top
for the target zone. Mach 3 baskets replaced the posts in 1989 along with
a redesign of the course. Westmoreland sits on the site of Eugene's
old airport at 18th and Chambers. Some of the debris from removing the old
runways and buildings forms the base of some of the course's terrain. This
underlying debris causes drainage problems and has led to stress on the
trees. Winter play can get very muddy, waterproof shoes are advised.
In the early 1990's the course was hit with bark beetle infestations which
weakened many trees. Along with the beetles, came several severe ice storms
to hit
the area in successive winters. By the end of the 90's Westmoreland was
losing many trees and needed help. The EDGC initiated the planting of 100 new
trees on the course in early 2000. A couple of course changes were made at
the same time. Over 50 neighbors and golfers planted the trees in under 4
hours, with the help of the city's tools and crew. Irrigation was also
installed about the same time. Nearly all of the trees are still alive and
growing (as of 3/12/07) and will be great obstacles in time. Many thanks
to Dave Battaglia for designing this popular course. The Eugene Disc Golf
club hopes to continue working with the city to improve the oldest
Eugene course.
