The Eugene
Disc Golf Club (EDGC) was formed in 1992 by local Eugene area Disc Golfers with the
intent of fostering a community of saucer tossers in the Southern Willamette
Valley. The Club has expanded from the original three founders to a roster of
over 150 disc golfers from all over the Pacific Northwest. The EDGC now sponsors
two Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) tournaments every year, the Great Northwest Open in April and
Eugene Disc Golf Celebration Tournament
in
September. Both tournaments have attracted over 140 participants from
around the Northwest and beyond. The Celebration
Tournament has been running for 18 consecutive yea rs. In 1993 the EDGC took over
running the event from the City of Eugene and has continued to do so for the
last 15 years! In the winter the Club has supported the Oregon Liquid
Environment Series run by EDGC member Tom Embree. This series of fun one day
tournaments at local Southern Willamette Valley parks has been running for
15 years. The Club has actively
promoted the sport to new players through clinic outreaches for kids in grades
K-12. The Club has sponsored deserving local Amateur players to help them attend the PDGA Disc Golf World Championships and other PDGA events. In 1997 the EDGC embarked on an ambitious proposal
for a new 18 hole Disc Golf Course at Dexter State Park outside of Eugene.
Through the hard work of volunteers from the EDGC and generous donations from
Disc Golfers from all over Oregon, the first 18 baskets were
planted in the ground at
Dexter
Disc Golf Course
in June of 2001. Currently, the EDGC has
submitted proposals for disc golf courses at Lynx Hollow State Park near
Creswell south of Eugene, Richardson Park at Fern Ridge Reservoir, and
Laurelwood Park in Eugene. Lynx Hollow has been approved and the installation should
begin in the next year. In the future the Club hopes to keep its positive
involvement with the growth of Disc Golf in Oregon and the Northwest as one of
it's top priorities!
